The town of Londonderry will receive nearly $11 million in grants and loans for a water main extension into the High Range Road area to service private wells contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyI substances (PFAS), also known as forever chemicals.
The Executive Council approved the request without debate at its meeting Wednesday in Meredith.
The extension will tie homes in this neighborhood into the Pennichuck East Utility system that supplies water to parts of Londonderry and other southern New Hampshire communities.
Environmental Services Commissioner Robert Scott said the state’s Drinking Water and Groundwater Trust Fund will supply $6.5 million of the cost with $1.5 million coming from the state’s PFAS Remediation Grant and Loan Fund.
The other $2.95 million comes from federal American Rescue Plan Act grants, Scott said.
The state will reimburse the town for its costs, which could be lower than the approved grant and loan amounts, he added.
The current interest rate on the PFAS loan would be 3.5% for a 20-year term.
The council also approved a $630,000 PFAS fund grant for Rutledge Place Condominium complex in Plaistow to tie into municipal water in that community.
