DERRY — A local man suffered serious, life-threatening injuries after he crashed his motorcycle into a sign post in Derry Monday night. Police say alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.
Police say Edward Spaulding, 51, of Derry was thrown from his motorcycle at the intersection of Crystal Avenue and Tsienneto Road after apparently striking a crosswalk sign post.
First responders were called after a Derry patrol officer discovered the aftermath of the crash at about 11:44 p.m. Spaulding was lying in the roadway, police say.
Derry Police Capt. Vern Thomas said a Good Samaritan who found Spaulding not breathing gave him CPR as did police officers when they arrived, and as a result, got him breathing again.
The Derry Fire Department transported Spaulding to Elliot Hospital. Thomas said he last heard that Spaulding was in emergency surgery for severe head trauma and other injuries.
“The head injury appeared to be the worst,” Thomas said.
Elliot spokesman Anne-Marie Hafeman said Spaulding was in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the roadway was closed for several hours while they investigated the crash scene.
They said alcohol and speed appear to be factors, but no charges have been filed at this time.
Anyone with information pertaining to the crash is asked to contact the Derry Police Department at 432-6111.
